Angela Moyra
Always surrounded by dad’s records, bookshelves, suitcases and singing family members, Dutch-born Angela Moyra (1985) always knew her path in life would lead to a passion for music. Inspired by the old sounds of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerarld, Dionne Warwick, to the modern tunes of Priscilla Ahn, Corrine Bailey Rae and Sara Bareilles, Moyra has developed a storytelling style of singing and writing. Her bedroom songs come from the happiness, thrills and constant struggles faced by a young woman, combined with the influences of her nostalgic English and tropical Indonesian roots.
At age 14 her her uncle taught her first chords and soon she’d discover how easy it was to develop her guitar skills on the internet but not until she was 19 she wrote her first song in her lonely apartment in Chicago where she was far away from home for a one-year internship abroad. Music started to become her companion and gave her comfort and support in a way it never did before. In 2009 after finishing her degree in Aberdeen, Scotland she felt is was finally time to give music a chance and started to sing her songs at open mics in Amsterdam and soon became a member of the Amsterdam Songwriter Guild.
In 2010 she flew to San Diego, CA to record her EP ‘Everything is Here’, this experience soon became a unforgettable one as she heard her songs come to life for the first time in the California sunshine. Arriving back in Amsterdam her friend Allan Eshuijs (‘Songkitchen’ producer/songwriter) stimulated her in 2010 to step out of her comfort zone and to participate in a talentshow on national television in Holland, she took the chance and auditioned with her song ‘Timid’. Her song became a little internet hit on youtube and myspace when she caught the viewers attention who all voted her to the final 6 of the show.
Earlier this year, after the whirlwind of participating on reatliy tv, she decided to focus more on her writing skills and sound. She has been performing on several stages in Holland, such as: Panama, Pakhuis Wilhelmina, Volta, de Groene Engel. In the mean time she signed up for de Grote Prijs van Nederland, the biggest competion in Holland for live music, where she is currently still enrolled in, making it to the finals of the category singer/songwriter in Paradiso december 10th.
While still being in the creative process of making poppy, jazzy, acoustic tunes, she is aspiring to record her debut album next year and to play on festivals and stages throughout the Netherlands.
