CaboCubaJazz

De dromerige en melancholieke melodieën van de morna, de blues van de Kaapverdische Eilanden, zijn geboren uit de verbinding van de fado's van de Portugese overheersers met de muziek van de afstammelingen van de West-Afrikaanse slaven.
Met de opzwepende, sensuele dansen als de Kaapverdiaanse coladera en levendige Cubaanse ritmes belooft deze combinatie warme, sprankelende muziek, waar weemoed en vurige dansmuziek elkaar afwisselen.

CaboCubaJazz was touring in the Netherlands in 2008 at major venues, among them The Royal Institute of the Tropes, Korzo The Hague and SJU Utrecht.

SWINGING AND SMOOTH SYNTHESIS OF CUBAN AND CAPE VERDIAN RHYTHMS
CaboCubaJazz seems to melt two different cultures without any effort. Initiator and percussionist Nils Fischer of Nueva Manteca fame, brought simply two of its Cuban and two of its Cape Verdian friends together, himself being the connecting rhythmic link.
However, there must have been done extra efforts for this swinging synthesis: In the refined polyphonic call-and-response singing with singer Dina Medina the Cubans sing the criolo lyrics near to perfection. Just when it all seems to become a little too sunny, pianist Carlos Matos plays a sensational intro to a morna, the local blues of Cape Verde. Here singer Medina shines thoroughly. Nevertheless in the two instrumentals CaboCubaJazz' musicians are really at their best: They enter the boundless landscapes of jazz.

Nils Fischer is one of the top percussionists in Europe, touring and recording constantly with the likes of Nueva Manteca, Cubop City Big Band, Drums United and many others, sharing the stage with such legendary figures as Giovanni Hidalgo, Orestes Vilató, Pío Leiva, Paquito d'Rivera, and Chocolate Armenteros. In 2007 Nils - with his own group Timbazo - released a CD as a tribute to veteran percussionist Joe Cuba. It is entitled ¡Gracias Joe Cuba! and several top artists contributed to its making. The album is prenominated for the US Grammy in 2008 along with Gloria Estefan and others and it has got rave reviews both at home and abroad. Nils Fischer & Timbazo performed at North Sea Jazz Festival in 2008, sharing the stage with Herbie Hancock.
Dina Medina, 1975 te Schiedam. Haar ouders zijn afkomstig van Kaapverdië, een eilandengroep ten westen van Afrika. Al op jonge leeftijd was zingen haar grote passie. Op twaalfjarige leeftijd zong ze voor het eerst in een band (Skysound). Binnen een jaar was ze te horen op LP’s van verschillende artiesten. Hierdoor was Dina de eerste kaapverdische zangeres die op zo’n jonge leeftijd professioneel met muziek bezig was. Op haar twintigste verjaardag lanceerde Dina Medina haar eerste album “Paixão e Coração” (Passie en Hart) waarmee ze haar naam als solozangeres vestigde. Dit album was een hit in de lusofone (portugees sprekende) landen. Voor de CD-presentatie werd samen met Djoy Delgado (toetsen), Grace Evora (drums/zang), Roberto Matias (bas), Johnny Fonseca (gitaar), Manu Soares (toetsen) en Milena Tavares (backing volcals) de band Splash! opgericht. Haar tweede solo album “Separação” (Scheiding) werd in 1997 uitgebracht. Dina heeft enkele albums opgenomen en in vele landen getourd waaronder Kaapverdië, Portugal, Angola, VS, Senegal, Moçambique, Spanje en Italië.
Carlos Matos werd geboren in 1972 te Rotterdam en komt uit een muzikale familie. Al op jonge leeftijd ontdekte men zijn opvallende interesse in muziek. Zijn speelgoed bestond namelijk grotendeels uit muziekinstrumenten. Op 13-jarige leeftijd begon hij de Kaapverdische muziek te ontdekken, die hij uitschreef en naspeelde. In 1990 deed hij mee aan het Yamaha Electone Orgelconcours waar hij in de Beneluxfinale de hoofdprijs in de wacht sleepte. Hij besloot in 1991 om naast orgel ook synthesizer te gaan spelen. Datzelfde jaar werd hij bandleider bij de groep Koladance, een van de voornaamste Kaapverdische bands van deze generatie. Het album 'Koladance' dat zedat jaar opnamen was een groot succes en werd Album van het jaar 1991. Vanwege deze doorbraak werd de band uitgenodigd om op te treden op het bekende festival Baia das Gatas waar zij de topper van het festival was. In 1992 werd Carlos aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium voor het hoofdvak piano toegelaten. Hij kreeg les van Jan-Laurens Hartong en Jos van Kleef.In 1993 werd hij muzikaal leider van de band Rabelados. Deze groep boekte enorme successen in Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Portugal, Kaap Verdië en de Verenigde Staten. Door het Kaapverdische Ministerie van Cultuur werd de band uitgenodigd om een concert te verzorgen voor de jaarlijkse parlementsbijeenkomst.Op het festival Gamboa '95 werd hun 2e album 'Sukuru' uitgeroepentot 'Beste Album van het jaar 1995'.
Armando Vidal Sanchez was born in Holguin, Cuba and graduated from the Havana Conservatory (E.N.A) in 1992 as a Classical and Cuban music Percussion player. Armando Vidal has played in various bands in Cuba among which the Orquesta Hermanos Aviles. Since his arrival in The Netherlands in 1996, he has been performing with La Banda Iré, Saoco, Rumbata, Estrella Acosta, Tumbabo, Bye Ya, Nueva Manteca and Nils Fischer & Timbazo. He played in The North Sea Jazz Festival with La Banda Iré (1999), Rumbata (2003) and Tumbabo with Izaline Calister (2004). Armando also has toured Europe with the Cuban Hip Hop band Eleyo and the Pop Flamenco band called Ifarias from Italy. Armando Vidal played in 2002 for one week at Ronnies Scott's, famous London Jazz club, with a band formed by Greg Handy, New York Tenor Sax player, and drummer Lucas van Merwijk and Cuban pianist Ramon Valle.
Dennis Nicles is one of Belgiums most in-demand bassists. Born in 1982 in Artemisa, Cuba, he studied at the Havana at the E.N.A. In Cuba he played with the Internationally acclaimed Latin jazz band Afro Cuba. Being equally at home on electric and double bass, he quickly found himself playing with a variety of bands when he left to settle Belgium in 2003: Belgium's number one salsa band Contrabando, El Tatoo del Tigre, CuJazz Ensemble, La Sonora Cubana, Rey Cabrera and many other projects. He recorded on several recordings such as on the internationally acclaimed Cd of "Doble Jugada".
