Deer Tick

Deer Tick is an American indie folk band from Providence, Rhode Island led by guitarist and singer-songwriter John McCauley. Deer Tick's music has often been described as a combination of folk, blues, and country with a strong grunge influence. McCauley is known for his distinct gruff-sounding voice.

The band began as McCauley's solo project in December 2004. Beginning his touring career with a lot of help from Brendon Massei (Viking Moses), McCauley had toured extensively across the United States by the age of 19. He released 3 tapes and numerous CD-Rs in this time period, and eventually settled into what is now known as Deer Tick. After almost one year of continuous touring McCauley came home to Providence, Rhode Island with a new found confidence and a number of songs including "Dirty Dishes", " Art Isn't Real (City Of Sin)" and "Ashamed".

Bassist Christopher Dale Ryan and drummer Dennis Ryan became official members of Deer Tick in mid-2007 while guitarist Andrew Tobiassen joined the band in August 2008. Keyboardist James Falzone played with Deer Tick off and on from 2006 to 2007 and Paul Marandola drummed from 2005 to 2007. Chris Ryan graduated from Providence College in 2007.

The group released its first studio album War Elephant on September 4, 2007. It was released on Feow! Records on September 4, 2007. While John continued to tour, the label and the band had disputes over royalty payments. Soon after, Partisan Records signed Deer Tick and re-released War Elephant on November 11, 2008. In May 2009, the band was the first band profiled on BriTunes, the web-only music interview program hosted by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams.

The band released their second album for Partisan Records titled Born on Flag Day, on June 23, 2009. It received wide critical acclaim, including Rolling Stone proclaiming it the "Country-Rock break-through of the Year". The band continued to tour and play on the road, while writing songs for their third album. They eventually toured through Europe and shared the stage with the likes of Neko Case, Dawes (band), and Jenny Lewis.

Guitarist Ian O'Neil joined the band in August 2009 after playing with New Jersey-based act Titus Andronicus. As a third guitar player O'Neil frequently plays the acoustic guitar at live shows while McCauley and Tobiassen play electric rhythm and lead, respectively. Although on most of the bands more raucous numbers [such as "Straight Into A Storm"] he plays electric guitar. He also has contributed one of his own songs "Hope Is Big" to the band's repertoire, which debuted in the band's live set in September 2009.

The band went to the Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York to record with producer Jason Meagher. On June 8th, 2010, the band released their third album titled, "The Black Dirt Sessions", and remained on Partisan Records. The album was the first after guitarist Andrew Tobiassen left the band and Ian O'Neil became the permanent second guitar player. The band also added the new permanent member Rob Crowell to their line up, playing keyboard and saxophone.

On June 16, 2010, Deer Tick made their network television debut by playing Baltimore Blues No. 1 on the Late Show with David Letterman. Legendary writer and editor Allan Jones (editor) wrote in Uncut (magazine) that, "“Deer Tick noisily essayed the kind of rock’n’roll you don’t hear these days as often as you’d maybe like, the sort that lights up everything around it like a burning house, and feel inclined therefore to cheer until you’re hoarse when you do.” The band signed a deal with Fargo Records to have all three of their albums distributed throughout the United Kingdom.

McCauley explained that he was hiking in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest near Bloomington, IN and noticed a deer tick on his scalp at the end of the hike. This inspired him to name his band after the parasite.
