ECKHARDT = Rik Elstgeest
Rik Elstgeest groeit op in Kopna Kopna, de vijfkoppige artrock band die in 2005 na ruim tien jaar – en een prikkelend album – ophoudt te bestaan. Sindsdien maakt hij muziektheatervoorstellingen bij de Veenfabriek. Daar ziet Elstgeest zijn oude bandmaten in wisselende samenstellingen terug. Daarnaast speelt hij nog regelmatig bij Ghosttrucker en Alamo Race Track.
In deze periode ontwikkelt Elstgeest een nieuw songrepertoire. Binnen de veilige muren van de Veenfabriek zonder enige haast, pretenties en gewapend met niet meer dan een akoestische gitaar krijgen de kleine arrangementen steeds meer kleur.
Met de release van The Big Blue Yonder brengen Veenfabriek en Rik Elstgeest nu het materiaal nu voor het eerst bij elkaar en wagen met ECKHARDT een sprong in het diepe.

Het debuut van Eckhardt klinkt zoals het tot stand is gekomen. Rust, liefde, jeugd, zon, regen, vriendschap het zijn woorden die bij beluistering te binnen schieten. Bij de webwinkel staat er onder Eckhardt: If you like Eckhardt, you also might like Calexico, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Flaming Lips, Andrew Bird, Cat power…

Live zal Eckhardt worden bij gestaan door Bo Koek, John van Oostrum en Ton van der Meer van de Veenfabriek soms aangevuld met bandleden van Alamo Race Track (die ook op het album meespelen), Bastiaan Woltjer (trombone) en Elma Plaisier (zang). Bij de concerten worden de nummers in z’n volle breedte uitgewerkt: De sfeer is “home” maar dan op een poppodium.

Eckhardt = Rik Elstgeest
Rik Elstgeest grew up in Kopna Kopna, the five piece artrock band which split after ten years and one largely misunderstood album. Four years down the road it transpires there’s still life after the band. Elstgeest continued to work with his former bandmates separately, performing in absurd and experimental music theatre at The Veenfabriek and playing with Ghost Trucker and Alamo Race Track. But the Big Blue Yonder is his first journey alone.

“The Big Blue Yonder” started out as a kitchen table project, but outside. Far from the safety of a band, a stage or studio, Elstgeest worked on the shape of Eckhardt. Without a deadline or pretence and accompanied by only an acoustic guitar and the help of a Swiss friend the songs gained colour. Only water, sunlight and a cool breeze were needed for the seed to grow, and of course the warmth of old friends who eventually joined him in the studio.

Eckhardt’s debut sounds like it was conceived. Peace, love, youth, sun, rain, friendship, a forest, warmth, holidays, open, calm, are words which spring to mind when listening. Live Eckhardt will be accompanied by the four musicians who make up The Veenfabriek, joined by the Alamo Race Track band members who also play on the album and Elma Plaisier (vocals) and Bastiaan Woltjer (trombone). During concerts the songs will be worked out in the broadest sense . The atmosphere is cozy and homely but on a pop stage.

Vrij onverwacht was er enige tijd geleden ineens dat opvallende album ‘Big Blue Yonder’ van ‘Eckhardt’, oftewel Rick Elstgeest. Opvallend vanwege de kleine, serene en onverstoorbare uitstraling van het project. Voeg daar nog de enorm warme gloed en de hoorbare kundigheid aan toe die er vanaf straalt en men kan niet anders dan concluderen dat Nederland een bijzondere act rijker is ... »
