PAUL VAN KEMENADE – (altosax- composer- bandleader-‘Stranger than Paranoia’ festival)

STARTED: age of 13 and in 1974 Brabants Conservatory Tilburg
PROFESSIONAL: since 1977 and started to set up own bands / projects , playing his compositions.
with a.o. duo van Rossum/van Kemenade, Palinckx & Palinckx, Gemeentereinigingsorkest Vaalbleek and Vaalbleek Vokaal by Niko Langenhuijsen, Brevis, trio/quartet/quintet/sextet under own name, several dance-projects, big bands, with performers, poets and painters, with de Orkaan with a.o. Bennink,and Bergin, The Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra by von Schlippenbach with a.o.Kenny Wheeler, Ed Thigpen, Benny Bailey, Gerd Dudek, with the Surinam Music Ensemble with Aki Takase, Bizar Habit, Eric van der Westen octet, with John Engels/Jasper van 't Hof/Eric Vloeimans a.o.
End ’80,/ beginning 90’s guest co-leadership of the workshoporchestra "de Boventoon" and playing in a lot of ad hoc ensembles. During 20 years ('79 - '99) he tought over hundreds of workshops throughout the whole country and for 5 years he conducted his workshoporchestra the "Brabants Leerorkest". From 1985-2005 he played lead in Willem van Manen’s modern big band ‘Contraband’ and works in 2007 25 years with his own quintet which performed with brass bands, popgroups, symphonic orchestras and different guest musicians from all around the world.
Awards:
1984 he received the "Podium Prijs" of the S.J.I.N., the Dutch Jazz Foundation.
1998 the 'Jazz in Duketown Award 1998'
1999 the "Moderne Industriestad Prijs Tilburg"
1999 the "VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs", an oeuvre award for professional jazzmusicians in the Netherlands for their contribution to Dutch jazzmusic and received in 2007 a Royal decoration (Lid Orde Oranje Nassau)

He has played throughout Europe,Canada, South- and West Africa, Indonesia and participates on more than 50 Lp’s and CD’s. He still teaches now and then guest workshops and is living in Tilburg since 1974. 7 years he was programmer of the jazzseries at the 'Theatre Festival Boulevard' in Den Bosch and . In 1993 he initiated the 'Stranger than Para..noia' festival at the 'Paradox' in Tilburg and is eversince the artistic director/programmer of this succesfull small festival.

Het 19e Stranger than Parania Festival is wederom een festival wat alle grenzen te buiten gaat. Allerlei diverse muziekdisciplines passeren de revue met het bindend element: improvisatie. Van bebop tot hardrock, van flamenco tot avant garde, van big band tot solo etc.. In drie steden dit jaar: in Avenue Theater Breda op 19 december, in Den Bosch Toonzaal op 21 december en in Paradox Tilburg op 22, ... »
